Macro Monday - Common Brown

One of the pleasures of photography is learning about the limitations and possibilities of the gear we save so hard to purchase.

After a long wait I got a longer lens at Christmas, and was delighted to find how close it's minimum focus distance is.  While it's never going to be a macro lens, its going to be good for butterflies and dragonflies where an extra bit of distance from the subject can be a help.

So here are two shots of a Common Brown - (Heteronympha metope).  I like the translucent feel of the first and the slightly battered condition of the second.  I assume that they have both overwintered somewhere, although the first seems to have an easier run than the second!

You can find more macro shots at Macro Monday.

Enjoy the close ups.

  2. It's a beauty Stewart.... I have a 70-300mm lens that I use for butterflies and dragonfiles - most always at the 300.... those little guys won't let you get very close :)

What kind of lens did you get?

  4. Yes Stewart, you should know better than that you cannot tell us about a new lens without giving details.

  5. Great shots Stewart! I hope you enjoy your new lens! My long lens is impossible for marco, with an 11 ft distance. Santa was ever so kind to deliver me a 100mm marco as an early xmas gift and I love it. I find myself now searching the yard for bugs:)

  10. Wow Stewart those photos are amazing. I have told myself I cannot indulge in photographic equipment until I understand all the settings on my point and shoot(and that's going to take forever).

  15. Hi Stewart, i have a 42-150mm and needs 0.9m distance to subject, good for butterflies but i found it not so clear in focus. When i got the 35mm macro, it is good in focus but i cannot go near the butterflies as they immediately fly away! Sigh!
